If you proclaim to have no energy to clean your house on a regular basis, you’re not alone.  You’ve worked all day or taken care of kids or a mix of both and you’re exhausted at the end of the day! The last thing you want to do is spend your precious free time cleaning.  But you love a clean house and it makes you feel so much better when it’s clean. So how do you get energy to clean house?

Eat Better (For Real)

The benefits of eating healthy are plastered all over but deep down you just dread making the changes to improve your diet and wonder how much benefit you’ll actually get.  I know, I’ve been there. Sugar was my best friend and I didn’t want to let go. And truthfully I haven’t completely let go but I drastically cut back and made some other diet modifications and I was totally surprised by how much better I felt.  I honestly didn’t even realize how bad I felt until I started feeling better.

Eating well also means drinking plenty of water.  Dehydration can cause you to feel tired. Even if you are drinking water, you may not be drinking enough.  Find out if you are drinking enough water and how to up your water intake.

The best way for me to drink more water is by using a Yeti water bottle.  I have tried A LOT of water bottles over the years and the Yeti is by far my favorite.  It keeps drinks cold for a super long time and is so durable.  I also don’t have to worry about the bottle sweating or leaking.  I added a Yeti straw cap because so I don’t have to unscrew the lid every time I want a drink, which helps me drink more throughout the day.

Time to Decompress

When your energy level is low, taking a short decompression break can leave you feeling refreshed.  Whether you have trouble waking up in the morning, hit a late afternoon slump, or are exhausted when you get home from work, take the time to do something for yourself that will give you energy to clean house.

What works for me may not work for you. Try out different things until you find something that gives a boost to your energy level.

Here are some ideas to try:

  • Blast music on your commute home or when you get home
  • Listen to a motivational podcast
  • Meditate
  • Call your best friend
  • Take a quick shower
  • Go for a walk
  • Read a couple chapters of a book
  • Take a cat nap.  Ok, this one totally does not work for me!  I can’t fall asleep for just 10-20 minutes. Once I’m down, I don’t want to get back up.  My husband, on the other hand, does this regularly with no problems.

Just be sure to put a time limit on your decompression time or else you may use it as an excuse to procrastinate.  To set a time limit, I’d recommend using a separate kitchen timer instead of a smartphone timer.  Using the smartphone time will give you one more distraction to contend with.  There are a ton of kitchen timer options, like the traditional digital timer and fun designs such as the cat timer or Star Wars timer.

Aromatherapy

If you’ve ever been to a spa, then you’re familiar with aromatherapy.  Walking into a spa gives you a sense of calm and the stress just seems to melt away.  That’s the power of aromatherapy at work. And while the scents at the spa are meant to help you relax, there are also scents to invigorate and boost energy.

Beth and Jenn at Recipes with Essential Oils provide seven essential oil combinations to help increase your energy level.  I personally love the grapefruit, lemon and peppermint blend.

Just Keep Moving

Sometimes you need to just push on through the slump.  There are definitely times I know if I sit down, then I don’t want to get back up.  But if I keep on moving and get involved in a task, then I’m usually ok and kind of forget how tired I was just a few minutes ago.

Exercise can give you the energy to clean house.  And by exercise, I don’t mean an hour of cardio (although if that works for you, yay!).  You may only need to do a few easy stretches to elevate your energy level.

Develop a Cleaning Routine

Following a cleaning schedule will make cleaning part of your daily routine.  Cleaning will eventually become something you just do as part of your day without really even thinking about it.

A realistic cleaning schedule helps break down chores into manageable tasks.  You won’t need to worry about having the energy for a marathon cleaning session.

Get Energy to Clean House

Choose one or more of the ways to get energy to clean house.  You may see an immediate boost to your energy or it could take a week or more to feel the difference.  If one thing doesn’t work for you then try another.  Don’t give up.

If you’re still struggling with low energy after trying several tactics, consider talking to your doctor about it.
